Thanks for the tip I've disabled opencl in darktable's core options.

The Geforce 8500 is old enough to shave. 
I am in the market for a new card, just not sure what to get since my
dell XPS has only a 450 Watt PS. I was looking at a Nvidia Geforce GT
640, which should be enough for Darktable and the ocassional video
editing.
