Hi,

I'm an amateur, shooting raw images with a dslr just for fun.
I'm trying Darktable in an attempt to replace the almost unmaintained
RawStudio.
Here are some questions and impressions I've gathered for the little
time I've
spent with DT. I'm using relatively new git-master-release.

Light table related:
1. Do you plan to implement a library.db per directory feature? This is
something
I really love in RawStudio. No matter where you move your images the
settings,
ranking, tags go with them and I like to manage my photos with a
file manager
(ls, cp, mv). I don't like the idea of in-program database.
2. I don't seem to like the idea of placing the xmp files next to the
original image.
RawStudio here does it better, by placing them in a .rawstudio
folder. Do you
plan to implement this feature, too?
3. A bug report: I've deleted several images on disk after I've loaded
them in DT
and now I'm getting the skull icon. How can I get rid of it?
4. I'd really use a vertical scroll for the image list. I see that there
is a position
marker, but a scroll would be far more useful.
5. The new focus detection feature is good, but I suppose focus-peaking like
preview would be better. I don't think the stylized rectangles are
too useful.

If you don't have time to work on 1 and 2, then would you accept patches?

Dark room related:
1. Do you plan to implement proper history like the one in Adobe's
LightRoom?
The current implementation is quite limited and not too
user-friendly. And the
lack of undo is quite annoying, especially when editing curves.
Currently it is
pretty easy to lose your image settings while testing various effects
and there
is no obvious way to go back to a state you like without redoing the
changes.
2. Do you have an estimate for the improved snapshots feature? I've seen on
the wiki that you have a plan to fixing my complaints about it.
3. Do you plan to add "free panning" or "panning passed the border" feature?
It is pretty annoying to edit mask curves without it.
4. Do you plan to add the possibility to enter numerical values with the
keyboard. I know you like to use fancy UI, but this must not hinder the
usability. The current UI is pretty hard to use when you want to enter a
specific value (I know about right clicking, but I don't think I like
it).
5. The range for exposure is quite useless - from -18 to 18, I think
that a range
from -3 to 3 will be a lot more useful.
6. There is no scroll in the filmstrip at the bottom and so navigating
hundreds
   of images is not easy.
7. Changing an image from the filmstrip requires a double click, but I'm
trying
to change them by single click and I'm always surprised that a double
click
   is required.

Generally DT seems like a very powerful application that lacks a bit of
UI polish.
It feels harder to use than RawStudio for the simpler cases of image
development, but pretty good when you need to do complex stuff.

I guess this is enough for a first post :)

Best regards,
Teodor
