Ups, sorry, I had posted a new feature request before seen this, at http://www.darktable.org/redmine/issues/9785 - I will try to mark as a suplicate. On the other end, issue #8968 is marked as "won't fix". I still see the usefulness of the proposed behavior, at least as an option. Not having it makes the first pass of image evaluation a pain if you shoot RAW+JPEG, and this pass is critical as speed is concerned --- is where you have the highest number of images to go through, and every keypress counts. At least "shift+R" to reject all images in the group should be considered, IMHO. Thanks.
