Success! Darktable is now going through nearly 50,000 images from my old
Lightroom archive, and seems to be handling it flawlessly. This is an
outstanding program -- my compliments to the developers.
For other Linux/Darkroom newbies, the trick is to mount the network drive
(not use a symbolic link). And if you use a Western Digital MyBookLive
network storage device, note that this does not officially support Linux
and the \\MYBOOKLIVE or \\MYBOOKLIVEDUO network address won't work -- but
you *can* use the IP address of the drive to mount it.
