Hallo,

from I would judge after a first glance at the samples the cause might be those small but bright pieces in the pictures: bikeride: the white part with the reflections in the bottom right part of the picture
stonehenge: the clouds in the top right corner

I noticed such behavior with my Nikon and Olympus Cams also.
This preserves details in the highlights in a first step and it's up to you to decide if this is a good idea - the way you like it - or not.

You may switch on 3.3.9.3. Over/underexposed warning and prove me right or wrong ...

regards
Bernhard

Hi,

I have a Pentax K-30.

I've noticed that for a lot of photos I take, the camera JPEG is
considerably, well, brighter than what Darktable shows initially when I load
the DNG file (base curve is set to Pentax).

I've uploaded sample files from

http://www.nawaz.org/media/images/darktable/photos.zip

You can see some examples here:

Darktable output:
http://www.nawaz.org/media/images/darktable/bikeride-7026.jpg

Camera JPEG:
http://www.nawaz.org/media/images/darktable/bikeride-7026-camerajpeg.JPG

Now for full disclaimer, on my camera I did set the contrast and saturation
to the lowest setting, so that will affect the JPEGs (and not the DNGs,
which is a good thing). However, I still think Darktable's base curve is a
bit too dark...

It takes me a lot of effort to get something decent out of these dark
photos, and I don't think I do a good job (Google Plus's automatic algorithm
did much better...). I know I can make my own base profile, but I feel I'd
be shooting a little in the dark.

Anyway, I wanted some feedback about this. Could it be that the default
profile in Darktable needs improving? Does anyone else have a better base
profile I could use?

(Note, I do NOT want low contrast and low saturation - I set those in the
camera just to get a more accurate histogram when previewing so that I know
I'm not losing data to highlights, etc).

Thanks.
