darktable is designed to not write at all to your raws. They are read 
but kept as they are. All changes to images are stored to so called 
sidecar files with extension .xmp. That's the same as Lightroom does,. 
However, the formats of the XMPs differ. Maybe your viewer understands 
halfways how to deal with Lightroom's XMPs and stumbles over the 
darktable generated ones.

Please copy your raws (the ones where you thought they were overwritten) 
without the XMPs to some other directory and try to display them from there.
