I had been trying to use the "delete" button to "physically remove from
the disk", but it neither deleted the file from disk nor from the
collection in dt. After making the change below, it is now working.
Don't know if it was related or not.

This seems to have fixed it. Value had been 0. I changed it to 1024.
Didn't make any difference until I restarted darktable, but now the
flashing is gone. Thanks for the tip.
