close darktable backup your current darktablerc and darktable.gtkrc from ~/.config/darktable and replace them with the versions from /usr/share/darktable/ this will restore the user interface settings to the defaults that ship with darktable. If this does not help, I would think you have serious problems with your visual settings for the window manager you are using in ubuntu.
