The "work-a-round" fails to have a proper "base curve" and other camera
specific adjustments and cannot be considered sane.  All you have done is
to lie to darktable about which camera specifics to utilize.  Except that
the D5300 is closer to the D750 than other models, you might as well have
told darktable you were using an Oly###.

You need to use a package built for mint that supports your camera, or
build your own which you see as too much trouble.  Unless of course your
photos are important to you.  Your choice, iiuc.  Or perhaps convince
someone else to build it for you.
