I didn't pay much attention to the shadows. Of course they could be optimized, but the difference in the highlights is much more evident, especially with those nasty tonal breaks using Darktable. When I tried to recover the highlights I ended up with the image I provided. Other programs do a better job for me here - or at least they can achieve better results more easily, maybe there's a trick I haven't figured out yet. I've tried this comparision with a few more pictures and when it comes to highlight recovery Darktable always scores last - with quite a distance (using darktable 1.5+2271~g7a04088).
