some things I found to be working so far:
Base of all this is a RAW image from vuescan, which for the time beeing should be TIF (http://sourceforge.net/p/darktable/mailman/message/33067885/)
Then I apply:
1. Invert - by using the color picker and select a rectangular of the non exposed film between two frames
2. crop and rotate
3. white balance - manual by selecting a bright neutral area in one of the images (for example the clock in the following image)

4. base curve - I created a "quick and dirty" film base curve (which seems to be inverse to the ones for the digital cameras) but when time allows I will do it more exactly by using a IT8 color target and metering out different shades of grey. 5. exposure - I select "auto exposure" to start with and after - if necessary - minor manual histogramm corrections.

These steps may be batch applied to the other photos - this is an example

and in my eyes this works even if the situation is totally different.

As I use a nikon scanner my next tests will be to adjust "analog gain" of the three color channels right in Vuescan so white balance will not have to do the heavy corrections necessary til now.

Hi Steve,

inspired by your question I am trying to optimize my workflow to use Vuescan to produce the RAW files and do everything else in darktable. I like to have "everything in one place", in this case: my complete archive.
And I like non-destructive workflow.

But I fear this will take some more time until I'm ready to post results. I'll let you know.

Bernhard,

When working in darktable I was looking to get the colours mostly right by working on one image and pasting the history stack to the other images but what worked on one image was wrong on others.

Thanks,
Steve.
