In the color zones module, you can use the mouse wheel to 
increase/decrease the size of the circle that's used to influence the 
spline when you drag.  You can also reposition the control points by 
dragging the triangles at the bottom left or right to further restrict 
your area of influence.  You could also try a parametric mask, on the 
Luma (L) or hue (h) tabs to further restrict the effect.

You could also try using the color correction module, although that does 
something more like split toning which doesn't sound like it's exactly 
what you want.
