That would be an argument for keeping the IR channel. How can it be
used in processing to get rid of scratches?

So are you now going to produce RGBI TIFF files? Do those work in
darktable? They do seem like the most sensible option. Is there any
software out there capable of using the RGBI data to cleanup
scratches?
