They are technically rather different. shadows&highlights *without* 
white point adjustment is designed to leave the black point and the 
white point where they are. This way you keep the overall contrast of 
the image. This is crucial as otherwise you would keep re-adjusting with 
other tools like tone curve. Additionally the neutral grey tones are 
left untouched in the module's default settings - you can control the 
range of the protected greys with the compression slider.
