By default, darktable treats the information that it stores in the database as
canonical, xmp files
are a backup. So to load the changes, you have to tell darktable that you want
to replace the
database's version with the version in the xmp file(s). There are two ways to
do that (that I can
think of), one for doing it in bulk, the other for individual files.

In bulk, for example a whole film roll:

* In lighttable, select all of the images in the film roll, and in the selected
image[s] module in
the right panel, click *remove*.
* Reimport the images so, for example, in the import module on the left panel,
click folder (or
whatever way you normally import) and select the folder that contains both your
images and xmp files.

Darktable will then import the files, applying any edits to the files that it
finds in corresponding
xmp files. Note that you should use the *remove* button, not the *delete*
button in the first step,
for obvious reasons. ;)

To apply the edits to individual files:

* In lighttable, click the file(s) you want to change.
* Expand the history stack module on the right panel.
* Click load sidecar file.
* Navigate to and select the xmp file that contains the edits you want to apply.

As an added bonus, note that darktable embeds the same history stack
information into exported jpgs.
So you can also select an exported jpg file as if it's an xmp file (just
change the dropdown in
the bottom right of the file picker dialogue to all files).
