Does "gnome-open http://cnn.com"; open Firefox for you? Beagle just uses the underlying GNOME mechanisms for this. I'm not sure if the "Preferred applications" thing works right; you might want to open gconf-editor and make sure that /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command is firefox.
