To be honest, I personally actually like it, because it forces you to think of stuff separately. One example I did recently was refactoring Addressable::URI out because of performance reasons. The separation made me focus on DO first, so I got that all working again, before even worrying about dm-core. This also meant I wrote it as clean as possible for DO, so I could then conform dm-core to that new standard. In practice it's extremely rare that you're having cross concern issues with DO and dm-core, especially because of the clean separation between what both parts are meant to do.
