Actually fastthread do not change threading. It only fixes several memory leaks of threading and mutex implementation on Ruby for long running processes. fastthread monkey patches the C part of Ruby, and you shouldn't have a problem with that. been using fastthread on 1.8.5 patchlevel 0 for quite long time. DM do not depend on fastthread, but Mongrel 1.1.5 and lower does.
