They've been working hard on this. I'm happy to say that with a lot of help from Alex Coles (myabc) I now have a major app working well with sql server.
Alex tackled a lot of issues that I encountered in my win2008 environment. He's documented all the installation steps at http://alexbcoles.com/code/2009/11/18/getting-started-with-datamapper-merb-on-jruby.html (BTW when we hit an error like the the one you quoted, the solution was to compile on an XP machine and copy the file across.) I'm fairly new to all this so Alex has been a great help. I hope this info helps you too.
