You are right. 2001 data were only available on a 'paid' basis, and were
not in public domain. I know this because a colleague had to purchase
the 2001 dataset for her city of study at the cost of more than 1 lakh
(back in 2005).
I guess we could write a joint letter to Census of India asking them to
release the 2001 data since they have already released 2011 dataset for
free!

The ward-level dataset that you are looking for wasn't
released by the ORGI for the Census, 2001. You may try
contacting one of their data centers (located at Gokhale
Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune & JNU, New
Delhi) for more dis-aggregated data though.
