Hi Rashmita, I haven't checked this for Mangalore myself, but will share with you how to extract data posted on OpenStreetMap:
1. Go on https://overpass-turbo.eu/ (think of this as a backdoor to OpenStreetMap's database) 2. Move the map to Mangalore. 3. Press "Wizard" button. 4. For stops, put in: *highway=bus_stop or amenity=bus_station or public_transport=station* and run the query. 5. You might get some output showing stops (or you may not.. it depends on whether people have contributed here or not). 6. Click on "Export" button. 7. Now you can download this data in any of the formats provided like .geojson, .kml etc. ------- - For routes, try out "bus=route". But this kind of data is hard to come by even in bigger cities. - QGIS has a plugin for directly importing openstreetmap data into the project. - The OSM Wiki has a well-curated guides and info on what queries one can use. My reference for the bus stops was: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dbus_stop ------- Plug for OSM This ease with which we can extract data, without any API key or difficult licensing/permission needs, is the reason why the open source community advocates to contribute to OpenStreetMap.org in addition to Google Maps. The latter may be the "xerox" of web mapping at present, but they snatch away ownership of everything that people contribute to them and make it very difficult for people like you and me to extract data like bus stops in a cit. Whereas OpenStreetMap keeps the ownership to the public commons, free and accessible for everyone, and also there are good ways of extracting data from there which allow infinite fine-tuning. Coverage of India's places on OSM is increasing, and there are several opportunities for people to contribute information there. Also, OSM is more focused on socially important mapping data whereas GoogleMaps is more geared towards businesses. So tree mapping, for example, can happen on OSM. ----- For those interested in being a mapper: Check out http://tasks.openstreetmap.in for ongoing mapping projects in India. You can also sign up to create mapping tasks (or let me know and I can help setting one up). This site is an India-specific node. The original tasks site was for mapping disaster-affected areas etc, that's on tasks.hotosm.org . There is also a teaching site: tasks.teachosm.org that's more geared for beginners and use in teaching sessions. And if you're in Pune, pls connect, we want to organise some mapping activities next month. - Nikhil VJ Pune, India +91-9665831250 On Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 2:01:51 AM UTC+5:30, S.Rashmita Patro wrote: > > Hi All, > > Can anyone help me to get the bus routes of Mangalore city in gis format? > > Regards, > Rashmita > -- Datameet is a community of Data Science enthusiasts in India.
