ry to compile your perl scripts using perlcc -B script.pl . After that your script is in ByteCode and perl does not need to parse the source anymore. This saves a lot of time. I did the same with awstats (a statistics analyser) it is at least 4 times faster now (measured on updates).

I think wget is preffered, since it can do mirroring automaticaly and do not require additional setups at my hosting. Let my know when you'll setup your mirror, I'll place link to it at index page.
