OK - I re-extracted the tar file into an empty directory and agree - 
apologies.
I'm not sure what happened; however, it might well have been that CPANPLUS 
reused a build directory.
After the failed build attempt in a clean directory, the two *.tmp files 
are present.
I suspect that I tried to install this some time ago and didn't remember 
after a week and more out of the office.

Oh well, 50% success rate for me reporting issues this time.  Better than 
0%; not good enough.
