So why did you say such domain is *not* your locally handled domain ? The
domain is very likely badly configured on your server. XMail tries to
deliver messages to such domain like if it was a remote domain.

nslookup uses SMART DNS servers that are configured in the system, while
XMail ( if you don't set SmartDNSHost ) perform queries directly talking
to remote DNS servers ( oubound port 53 ).
