With regards to your JTAG question, the only reason we suggest to put DVEVM in
UART boot mode is to have the hardware in a know state; when you are using
JTAG, it is assumed that no activity would take place via UART and hence the
hardware will stay in a un-initialized state repeatedly trying to boot from
UART. By having hardware in this state, we ensure JTAG communication will work.
Optionally, you can leave red dip switch in NOR boot mode (1011111110) and
break u-boot boot process by pressing any key within the allowed time. This
also puts the DVEVM hardware in a know working state which allows JTAG
communication. In fact, this is the way I operate for the most part.
What is important is that the Linux kernel not start loading; when this
happens, the virtual memory manager kicks in and CCS does not know how to
communicate with the DVEVM very well at this point.
That said, UART boot mode is very desirable (more convenient than JTAG ) at
manufacturing time, as you can load firmware (e.g. u-boot, u-image) via UART
rather than JTAG.

Subject: XDS510 JTAG emulator setup
I have a JTAG setup question. We’re using the USB XDS510 emulator and CCS 3.2
to talk to the DVEVM board.
The DVEVM technical reference says that we have to put the boot mode into “Boot
from ROM UART” (positions 1
and 2 of red S3 switch set to ON) for the emulator to be able to flash NOR
flash using flashwriter_nor.out. Why does
the boot mode have to be in “Boot from ROM UART”? Our custom board will have
boot mode hardwired to “Boot from
AEMIF”, does that mean we will have issue trying to flash the NOR flash?
Regards,
Andy
