Have you checked that the DM9000 driver is enabled in the kernel?

Device Drivers -> Network Device Support -> Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) ->
 <*>   DM9000 support

In the kernel I built from GIT I found that the default config for the
DM355 didn't have this enabled.
