Hello,

Is it possible to create a DMS container on a raw device on Solaris that is
smaller than an entire disk slice? I'm not much of a Solaris sysadmin, so I
don't know if that OS offers something akin to AIX logical partitions,
which allow lots of small bits of raw disk space to be created. As I add
more and larger disks to my Solaris server, I find the limit of seven
slices of raw space per disk to be somewhat confining, especially since the
newer slices are bigger than the slices on the older disks that currently
hold my DMS tablespaces. I strive to keep my container sizes within each
tablespace equal, but the seven slice limit for each disk makes it
difficult to switch to larger drives. To maximize uptime, I usually throw
additional compatible containers at existing tablespaces, since a DMS
rebalance can be done in the background. I currently view a redirected
restore as a rare luxury, and somewhat of an admission of defeat, due to
the requisite downtime involved.

Also, I'd prefer not to switch to mounted files as DMS containers, but it
seems like that is about to become my only option, unless one of you knows
of a better way.

Thanks,
