Hi guys,

I certainly wouldn't want to see IRC replace any of the DB2 mailing
lists, which have proved very useful over the years. I'll still be
participating as best I can in the lists.

IRC is much more spontaneous and interactive than e-mail lists; e-mail
lists are much better for studied thought and detailed technical
explanations. In that sense I think they are complimentary.

What "inspired" me to give an IRC channel a try is the experience I've
had on the #mysql channel. There's always lively chat about database
issues, and always someone willing to answer a question. It is a bit
like the chat in the corridors of an IDUG conference, rather than the
technical sessions themselves.

I know there are issues around firewalls which may restrict a lot of
people accessing it from work.

I also feel that IRC may be more used by LUW people than by z/OS people,
and may even encourage people who are used to MySQL and Access to look
at DB2 !!! But I stand to be proved wrong.
