Hi there,

yes I used often the port number and I never had a problem, but you should notice that the mapping port number service name in the services file it is not only intended to be able to use a more intuitive name rather then a sometime more complex to remember port number; the more important reason why you want always to insert the line in the services file is that in this way you are reserving the port for your application and it won't be possible for anyother application to start communicating on that port blocking your DB2 client the ability to communicate with the server.

So you can use the port number without problems but still you need to update the services file .

hope this helps

We had a hardware problem with one of our servers yesterday and the network
person in the process of problem determination overlaid the SERVICES file
and wiped out our DB2 port.  So I'm trying to think of a way that this won't
happen again.
In the
Version 7 Installation and Configuration supplement -- Configuring TCP/IP on
the Servers it states,
You don't have to specify a service name in the svcename field, if
you have directly specified a port number.
Does any shop specify a port number i.e. 50000 for the svcename instead of a
name and putting that name in the services file?
TIA
