The problem remained; but instead an error message saying something like "Could not load field names for 'dfs.products'" appeared. Then I installed a newer version of the ODBC driver, version 3.51.11, and the problem has now disappeared. So, it looks like the problem was caused by the ODBC driver. I am still getting strange database-access errors later in the report creation process, but these are probably unrelated to this issue; I will investigate this further.
