test new DBI version against current DBD:Oracle

Hi,
 
We have several servers that use DBI 1.13 which I want to upgrade to 1.16.
All the steps up to and including 'make test' work fine.
Is there any I can test that newly build version with my current DBD (Oracle
1.06) drivers ??
 
Would 'use lib "new-dbi-dir"'  work? 
 
I could of course make a backup of the old DBI and install it anyway, but I
rather not (possible downtime and such)
