Sounds like it is like FreeBSD, which has perl libs installed in /usr/libdata/perl. DBI probably installed into /usr/local/lib/perl5 or /usr/lib/perl5. You could upgrade perl to 5.6.1 and install it into your directory of choice and have a newer version of perl :-)
