That might be a "failure of the imagination". Imagine, for one example, more databases being available on the internet as public resources. A "DBI URI" would be one of the ways that access to them could be speficied. It would also force us to consider more carefully the syntax and possibly define a cannonical form that drivers could/should optionally support (in addition to their own 'natural' syntax). Namespaces are important things and it pays to be a good citizen as the cost/inconvienience of a clash in the future can be hard to judge. Few drivers or applications have made much use of the numeric namespaces assigned to the DBI here ftp://sqlstandards.org/SC32/SQL_Registry/ but I'm very glad to have them in place. Tim.
