Looks like I pretty much got it--I su'd to root and then everything seemed
to work, Everything, that is but the tests. Did I miss some doc somewhere
that describes seting up a user and passwd so that the tests would execute
properly?

Make absolutely sure DBI is installed where DBD::mysql can find it.
This error usually appears when DBI is not installed. Were there any
other error mesages?

If DBI is installed, make sure the user running 'perl Makefile.PL' can
read the files.

In some OSs, you also need execute permission for DBI's shared library
(e.g., DBI.dll in Win32 and DBI.so in Linux).

This is the right list for DBI and DBD install questions.
