Reinstalled DBI and it looks like everything's OK now. No idea how I
screwed it up initially...

Maybe it's a Mac OS thing, but I don't seem to have a DBI.so file
anywhere on my system. (I'm assuming it must not be a requirement since
stuff works as long as I run from the /Library/Perl/darwin directory).

Check the permissions on DBI.pm and DBI.so.  It appears that root has
permission to read the first and execute the second, but your regular
account does not.

In my system:

$ cd /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/
$ ll DBI.pm
-r--r--r--    1 root     root       230704 Aug 22 14:25 DBI.pm
$ cd auto/DBI/
$ ll DBI.so
-r-xr-xr-x    1 root     root       138476 Sep  9 06:42 DBI.so
