Here's what I suggest:
o Extend your patch to cover both VSINSTALLDIR and MSDEVDIR. Not perfect, but better 
than nothing
o Add text to indicate one is for v7 and one for v6 of VC++
o Change text since under VC++ 6 it is not necessary to
'run vcvars32.bat from your Visual Studio installation directory'. I used to run it 
from anywhere, I'm sure. In fact, I keep a copy in c:\bin1. Perhaps just say 'run the 
vcvars32.bat which came with VC++'. It's in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual 
Studio\vc98\Bin, if you wish to advise where to look for each version of C++
