Thanks Jeff.

I'm think after something more plain and "graphic".

Yep, I agree. Mine were more in the spirit of fun and to get the ball rolling than necessarily good contenders.

The core concept needs to work in black and white,

Yep, although I can see some value in having a high-end and a low-end variant.

Here's what I'm thinking of currently:

Nice! My only hesitation is that they do not seem to reduce too well. I would guess that the logo will primarily be used in a small rectangle similar to the W3C "XHTML 1.0" validation boxes which are 88x31 pixels and perhaps also as a larger page header logo (W3C's is 315x48, see http://www.w3.org/ for examples of large logo at top of page and small logo at bottom.)

They're a bit rough and there are some variations I'd like to
explore, especially in the "negative space" (to use an arty phrase).

Yes, the "negative space" was what I was aiming for too. The Roman-style capitals I used are perhaps too skinny but they have an absolutely gorgeous negative space (compare the rounded shape of the inside of the D and the B). These are based on the shape of a chisel carving on stone (the source of Roman alphabets) whereas yours is based on a typewriter character set. For me, the Roman Capitals convey the right mixture of permanence, strength, and elegance that should represent DBI, not that I'm reading too much into it or anything :-).
