Before I had a chance to read through the article, I was looking through another mailing list and noticed that somebody else had the same problem and Randy Kobes set out to fix it - he compiled a new package against mysql-4.1.10: DBD-mysql-2.9005_3 and posted it for 8xx and 6xx. Linked respectively.

He also notified a guy at ActiveState of the new package. Hopefully they'll bundle it. It seems to work great.
