Yikes! No wonder. That version is almost three years old. It was written long before I introduced the primary key optimizations. I'm about to release version 1.12 and the difference in the seven versions since the one you have is huge. You can get a pre-release version of the latest changes at http://svn.perl.org/modules/SQL-Statement.
Note to me: always ask about version first. Note to users: please check your version numbers and upgrade :-).
