Within limits. A 10g client for instance cannot connect to a database with a version < 8.1.7.4, or an ORA-3134 will be encountered. Older clients can often connect to the latest server, but it may not be supported. eg. if it doesn't work right, too bad. Connections between Oracle 7 and 9.2 are not supported. A 9.2 client cannot connect to a 7.3 database, though a 7.3 client can connect to a 9.2database. We have an app that does this, simply because there is no way around it, unsupported or not.
