Oracle's sqlplus doesn't appear to have a -verbose switch, but maybe
there is an option you can set on the connection to find out what's
going on inside.

          This still doesn't explain the difference between
DBD::Oracle and
sqlplus. They must have had different execution plans
internally somehow.
