It's most likely an incarnation to the looping bug, as yet unreported in mantis.

Summary: Huge load on mysql server
Description:
dbmail-imapd causes a massive amount of queries. a dozen logged ppl with an
usual behavour do cause every couple of days upto 300.000queries per
second! this is huge... this brings the whole system down since it causes
a pretty high load on the system

IMAP does cause a lot of queries. Some speedups have already gone in
(2.0.1), and more are on the way.
