Hi!

It's defined by the client software you are using. The only special 
folder is INBOX itself.

So you may use whatever you like. Actually, every client can use 
whatever layout they/their mail program use.

AFAIK meta folders, where for example Sent, Sent Items and the countless 
language specific variations would all point to the same folder have not 
been implemented yet. Nor standardised.
