Don't forget to run the scripts provided for the version 3.x to 4.x upgrade, there's some really different ways the mysql deals with permissions. I initially didn't do this (duh) and just installed an updated RPM and it screwed my whole server up..

hehe.. then I read the instructions. There is a helpful page at: http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Upgrading-from-3.23.html

Hi!

Really, MySQL upgrades are pretty seamless. Install your MySQL binaries
and libraries and recompile DBMail if you really want to and restart
MySQL and DBMail! Done!

I would like to be able to do this nice and cleanly, first removing the old, then installing the new and then restoring databases from dumps. I also don't want to miss any mail though while I am fiddling around with this :/
