You could use pop-before-smtp and imap-before-smtp. We use it at our company and didn't have problems with this method yet. I created a new mysql-user who only can read the popbeforesmtp table and a script is invoked by tcpserver which sets the RELAYCLIENT enviroment var if the ip where it has the connection from is in the database. Tomorrow when I'm at work I could send you the script, if you want to have it :)
