I'm currently using Horde/IMP as it seems to be the fastest I've used for a
large message base.

I tried nullWebMail, a C cgi app which is pop3 only, pretty fast but not ready
for prime time.

I've also tried phpGroupWare, very slow and eats lots of memory for mailboxes
with lots of messages.

I used squirrelmail for awhile too, but found that squirrelmail and dbmail
together wouldn't always retrieve every message. By mistake one day I noticed
messages in the database that were not being brought up in squirrelmail. To
verify I used a couple of other IMAP clients and they would bring up all
messages and squirrelmail would not. (not real scientific... but after too much
time spent on verifying and debugging, I got real tired of double checking for
lost messages and switched!)

Haven't tried the eGroupWare suite yet, and there are still numerous others out
there... lots to choose from.
