I would recommend something more recent like 7.4.6.  Postgres is very easy to 
compile and you can likely find a binary for your distro.  

On nightly maintenance Postgres does recommend that you perform a VACUUM of 
the database.  These allow Postgres to help free up table space and clean up 
indexes.  There is documentation with Postgres on how to scheduler a vacuum 
in cron.
