Nah, the Germans are just being their logical selves. In Germany, if
your terms of service (Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen) say that you'll
store mail and not that you may delete it or filter in delivery, your
duties are to store mail and not to delete it or filter on delivery.

If, on the other hand, you say that you may on some conditions delete
mail, then you may on those conditions delete mail. Here's an sentence
saying so, from a big freemail provider's terms of service:  "GMX ist
berechtigt, die im Account des Kunden gespeicherten Nachrichten und
sonstige Dateien nach einem Zeitraum von 6 Monaten der Inaktivität
(kein Login über Webbrowser oder E-Mail-Programm) ohne Rückfrage zu
löschen."

(I love the grammar, btw. "6 Monaten der Inaktivität." Solidarität dem
unterdructen und geknechteten Genitiv!)
