I haven't played with lmtp yet, perhaps it's time.
As for my postfix config, it's amiss on purpose. That is, it tries to
deliver using procmail first, if procmail fails (typically no
corresponding local user account) then it delivers via dbmail-smtp. I
have it going through procmail for filter purposes. If there is a
better way to do this, I'm all ears.

ps: I was able to move get all the mail that was delivered to
/var/spool/mail/<username> into dbmail using the dbmail contrib tool
mailbox2dbmail, it worked like a champ for me.

It sounds like something is amiss maybe with your postfix
transport config. It should be sending the messages to queue
and not to the Unix maildrop when your MTA goes down. Then,
when your MTA is back you simply do a postfx flush or a
postsuper -r ALL to requeue everything.
Check your master.cf and then your main.cf to make sure it
knows only dbmail-smtp or dbmail-lmtp:127.0.0.1:24 for
transport.
and a good suggestion would be to use lmtpd for primary
delivery and dbmail-smtp for your exceptions if you have
any.

a result Postfix dumped the mail into

My question is: How do I now get those messages into
dbmail? Do I
somehow get postfix to reprocess the email in
/var/spool/mail so that it
will try again to deliver it via dbmail-smtp, or is there a
way to tell
dbmail-smtp to do it?
