  I think your original logic is probably fairly sane.  IIRC, email
addresses are required to be case insensitive, hence the aliases are;
I would really doubt that in practice anyone is relying on case
sensitive username uniqueness (eg. [EMAIL PROTECTED] is userid "bob",
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is userid "BOB").  It seems that you'd simply save an
occasional support call by doing case insensitive userid lookups.
